How it works, step by step
What is loaded here, which port it leaves from, and what the Australian authorities require at the other end.
- 1 Inventory and packing We list every item, then pack, wrap and build timber crates where they are needed.
- 2 Loading at your address The container comes to you, with a furniture lift if the access needs one.
- 3 Export customs at Piraeus The container to the port, and the export declaration filed by our own brokers.
- 4 The sea leg Loaded onto the vessel, and our Australian partner briefed before it sails.
- 5 Inspection, clearance and delivery Biosecurity inspection and import customs, then delivery to your address.
What crosses the Australian border, and what does not
Australia is an island continent with flora and fauna found nowhere else, and biosecurity is the most serious question hanging over any consignment. The check happens on arrival, and DAFF carries it out.
Gets through
- Household effects declared on the ABF’s B534 (Unaccompanied Personal Effects) form.
- Furniture, clothing, books and household equipment, clean and dry.
- Timber crates with certified heat treatment or fumigation, to the destination country’s standards.
Does not, or is inspected hard
- Soil in plant pots, on garden tools, bicycles, hiking boots or sports equipment.
- Seeds, nuts in shell, plant material, straw and bamboo products.
- Hides, hair, feathers and animal products.
- Vacuum cleaners, barbecues and anything carrying food or plant residue.
- Anything owned for less than twelve months - it must be declared separately on the B534.
An item that fails inspection can be treated, seized or destroyed, at the consignee’s expense. Which is why the check happens here, before it goes into the container.
Documents you need
Two borders, two files. We prepare the Greek one with you; the Australian one is signed by the owner of the goods.
1Greek side
- A copy of your ID card or passport.
- Your tax identification number (ΑΦΜ).
- Authorisation for our customs broker.
- The Law 105 solemn declaration - we supply the form; it must be certified.
- The Packing List.
2Australian side
- Form B534, completed and signed by the owner of the goods.
- Passport and Australian visa or residence status.
- Delivery address and contact details for the consignee.
Official sources
- ABF - Unaccompanied Personal Effects: how effects travelling separately from you are declared, with the B534 form.
- DAFF - Importing goods: the biosecurity rules for imported goods.
- DAFF - Importing motor vehicles, motorcycles, tyres and machinery: cleanliness requirements for vehicles and machinery.
The competent authorities are today the Australian Border Force (ABF) for customs and the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) for biosecurity.
Other documents or procedures may be required, and each country’s laws can change without notice. Contact us and we will give you an up-to-date briefing.
Why us
We do not send consignments to Australia; we send households. Many of our customers make this journey once, and the container holds things that cannot be bought again. So we keep you informed, with patience and respect, about the whole process, about the documents, and about prohibited items - so that you know everything before you decide, rather than when the phone rings from customs in Melbourne.
It is a real honour that so many Greek-Australians trust us with this.
